Choose to Do the Impossible
Doing the impossible depends on what we believe to be true. When I was a young girl, perhaps nine or ten, I was small in stature and sometimes told I was “too little” to do certain jobs like hanging a blanket on the clothesline. This adult assumption made me mad and all-the-more determined to show the naysayers I was big enough to put laundry on the line. Call it stubborn or confident—either way, I did do the impossible and the blanket hung proud beneath the afternoon’s sun.
The Gift of Determination
The gift of determination appears to be a natural part of my God-given bent. Can’t was never easily accepted in childhood—or now. In fact, I find this mindset a blessing. Where others might quit, I find willpower enough to believe it’s possible to accomplish what I set about doing.
Gratefully, I attribute some of my optimistic outlook to my mother’s encouraging words. “Where there’s a will, there’s a way,” she’d say, and I believed I could live life with an “I can” tenacity. This proves there’s power in words that fall on a child’s ears. Words are impressionable and will either build up or tear down. A child who is repeatedly told he or she will never achieve their dreams because of poverty, absence of intelligence, opportunity, or lack of social stature or physical beauty, is apt to accept what they hear as truth. But, if there’s a better voice, one full of inspiration that speaks louder, life choices are more apt to propel that child to their true potential.
Christians know there’s a source more powerful than themselves behind believing in self. We see Jesus Christ as the Strength-Giver on which we stand. His divine power is alive in the believer’s marrow. Impossible isn’t our go-to reality. We are co-workers given divine strength to accomplish all things.
The Impossible Made Possible for Elizabeth and Mary
Think of Elizabeth, Zechariah’s wife. (Luke 1). Barren for decades, most folks said it was impossible for an elderly woman to become pregnant. But God thought differently. Her womb was opened, and she brought John the Baptist into the world; just as the angel had revealed.
Think of Mary, a teenager who had never been intimate with a man. One day the angel Gabriel paid her an unexpected visit. He told her she would become pregnant and give birth to the long-awaited Savior. How? To the human mind this was impossible. But not to God. Luke 1:36 states: “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you.”
Don’t Be Deterred
Are you are facing something that seems unattainable? Don’t be deterred. Talk to the Lord about your needs and then watch for doors to open and blessings to walk in. God still does the impossible for people today. He brings strength when strength is needed, hope when life hurts, and help in unforeseen ways. Why? Because His love is watching over us. Matthew 19:26 states: Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”
