When is the last time you stopped to give thanks for your favorite things? In a world where negativity runs rampant, being thankful is the anecdote. Cynicism stops when we purposely turn our thoughts in the opposite direction. Positive thoughts are powerful. Their healing presence lightens moods and brings to mind happy things that make our heart sing—things worthy of thanks.
Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7
God Understands
God understands our every need. He knows anxious thoughts will rob us of the peace He longs for us to have. Being thankful ushers in that peace. Plus, there’s no better way to teach children how to count their blessings than to teach gratitude by example.
A Time to Discover
Jesus said, “But blessed are your eyes because they see, and your ears because they hear.” Matthew 13:16
Are you ready to begin counting those favorite things? I pray it’s as enjoyable an adventure for you as it’s become for me. Interestingly enough, most of my favorite things can’t be bought with money. Instead, they are seen with the eye and reside within the heart. On my list of favorite things are:
Nearest and Dearest:
- Waking up to my husband singing a line or two from a love song.
- Early morning prayer time.
- Pure trust in the eyes of a little white dog whose waggy tail makes me smile.
- Times spent with children and grandchildren, siblings, and extended relatives. Familial ties bind hearts together.
- Good friends; our conversations flow so naturally.
- Church gatherings. Corporate worship and prayer are priceless gifts.
- A place to call home and food in the cupboards.
Nature’s bounty:
- Branches of tall pine trees dancing in the wind.
- Beautiful Autumn leaves to gather or crunch beneath my feet.
- The magic of Winter’s snow so soft and white.
- Springtime’s return. The earth awakens with a feast of flowers declaring, “we’re back.”
- Summer’s warm days, garden bounty, and long daylight hours.
- Cascading waterfalls, rainbows, National Parks, long hikes, and wildlife to enjoy.
- Eye-catching sunrises and sunsets.
God’s Goodness:
- God loves me. His love is without end. (Psalms 33:22)
- I am saved by grace. Jesus took my sins upon Himself. He is my Good Shepherd.
- God’s promises are true. (Luke 1:45)
- God’s mercies are new every morning. (Lamentations 3:23 NLT)
- The Bible is right. Laughter really is good medicine.
- All things [even the difficult stuff], God works for good. (Romans 8:28)
- God provides. He meets my needs both big and small.
There’s so much to be thankful for. Writing down our blessings adds to our happiness. There’ll be greater peace and awareness of God’s loving presence.
Please consider taking the time to give thanks for your favorite things. This is a great family activity. You’ll learn so much about each other. Making room for positive vibes is good for all of us. No matter what life doles out, keep in mind every raindrop is a reason to give thanks; for without the rain the flowers won’t grow.
Prayer: Lord, bless ___________ with more of You today. I pray for moments of reflection where those favorite things are brought to mind. Carry negativity far away. May every blessing found add happiness and newfound joy. Set in motion a litany of praise and thanks that glorifies Your Holy Name. Amen
