Good reasons why it’s smart to challenge cultural beliefs.
Voices from conflicting points of view influence our thinking far more than we realize. But which voices should be given validity? Can we avoid the culture trap?
Political Voices
There’s no escaping the extremes of political “rightness” in our country; and the political “wrongness”. Keeping the government closed might not be the answer, but not upholding our immigration laws isn’t the right course of action either. So when it comes to politics, there are plenty of voices from every party, and the media, to assault our minds. Some choose to protest in anger or a peaceful demonstration. But what if prayer could bring more camaraderie?
Teachers and Instructors
What about the schools and universities? Children are entrusted to teachers/instructors, many of whose worldviews differ widely from basic Christian truths that we grew up with; the same Christ-centered values we attempt to instill in our boys and girls. What’s a parent to do? Get acquainted with those teachers. Speak truth to your children. Home school if necessary. Read Scripture aloud so children hear it. Then when a discussion stirs up dissension within the family, rather than argue, check out what God has to say about that particular subject.
Psalm 8:33 Listen to my instruction and be wise; do not disregard it.
Proverbs 16:25 There is a way that appears to be right, but in the end it leads to death.
Christ Voices
Do we value the words of Christ? And, do His words guide our days? When we are grounded in the word of God, and see Christ as our number one Counselor, we stand a good chance of discerning cultural lies from truth. Living to please God brings an awareness of wrong thinking despite what is being broadcast in the news or infiltrating our communities. Movies and music are going to remain popular. But the influence of Hollywood is leading viewers to believe gender can be tampered with and God is going to tolerate any decision a person makes. But does His word validate that thinking? Probably not. But, if it does, then feel free to follow along.
1 John 1:6-7 If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.
By now I hope you agree that for our own good it’s smart to question, and even challenge, cultural beliefs. God promises those who follow His revealed word actually align themselves up to find greater overall life satisfaction. Count me in!
