A surprising look at majesty beneath the surface

To look at the landscape, nothing appears unusual about the rise and fall of dry land. There are numerous cactus varieties and miles of hiking trails. A desert is supposed to look this way. But this place is much more than what the eye can see with a surface glance. We’ve been told of a world beneath our feet where the power of Majesty is obvious.

Caving, also traditionally known as spelunking in the United States and Canada, is the recreational pastime of exploring wild (generally non-commercial) cave systems. In contrast, speleology is the scientific study of caves and the cave environment.[1]

A Rare Treasure

Forty-five years ago, two twenty-something cave enthusiasts found a sinkhole. Climbing down, curiosity led them into an underground passage way. Eventually they came to an amazing world of stalactites, stalagmites, butterscotch formations, moon milk—clearly a hidden world of astounding beauty. The men kept this rare treasure a secret for another fourteen years to protect the cave from exploitation and to preserve its distinctive qualities.

Surrounded By Majesty

Since 1999, guides at Kartchner Caverns State Park, Arizona, began taking visitors inside these limestone mountains. As we toured, there was no denying God’s awesome Majesty was on display in big ways. Something this unexpected, so incredibly rare, dramatically extravagant, had gone undiscovered for thousands of years until God inspired two men to explore. Now, it is a tourist attraction for the rest of us to enjoy.

Discover Inner Grandeur

If God displays this much grandeur beneath the earth, isn’t it possible for Him to be about a deeper work in our lives, too? I believe He wants us to tap into His mind-blowing power. Let’s dare to explore. After all, we are formed in His image and even called His handiwork. Maybe it’s time to climb into some personal spelunking and discover our hidden potential.

Ephesians 2:10 For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. Apart from Christ, we don’t possess enough power to experience our truest capabilities.

Crawl Through the Sinkhole to the Authentic Me

If we’re honest, we’ll likely need to crawl through a sinkhole. A sinkhole is any place where shame found a home and we’ve come to believe our dreams aren’t possible. It can be a bitter spirit, a consequence to wrong choices, or serious financial troubles. Sinkhole experiences clamor to define who we are. That’s not God’s plan. With the Holy Spirit’s help let’s wander further until we enter that big cavern full of beauty; the inner authentic me-place that’s been dormant far too long and where the Spirit of victory rises.

Move Past Fear

Fear of dark places is never the voice of God. Don’t give in to it. Instead, let’s be brave enough to discover hidden truth, to believe in God’s promises, to birth those unique treasures God put in us that are meant to benefit us and bring Him glory.

Majesty’s Power in Us

Remember the mountain didn’t create the caverns. God did. That same power is at work in us. Our Creator is ready to pour out His all-surpassing power—ready to create beauty out of mere flesh and bone. “Wow!”
