Thanksgiving in Biblical times was not about turkey and cranberry sauce. It was part of community life and centered on the goodness of the Lord.
Thanksgiving Directors Were Appointed
Nehemiah 12:46 For long ago, in the days of David and Asaph, there had been directors for the musicians and for the songs of praise and thanksgiving to God.
A bit of history: David, was one of Israel’s Kings, and in the direct lineage of Jesus Christ. While Asaph, was from the family appointed as musicians, and tasked with serving the house of God.
Giving thanks was so important to community life that directors were appointed to organize the giving of thanks to God. This practice reminds us of today’s churches where music/worship directors are hired/appointed to oversee the worship music. But what about those who don’t attend church regularly? Shouldn’t they also give thanks? I think so. It’s possible for all of us to be thankful, and even praise God, but there’s something special about coming together to join our voices in worship to the Lord.
Thanks In Times of Victory
In times of victory, like the completion of the rebuilt wall of Jerusalem, the celebration was one of thanksgiving to God and did not focus on the labor of the men. The work was completed in record time. God had allowed them to fortify the city that once lay in ruins.
Biblical Thanks is Ongoing
Biblical appreciation for the goodness of the Lord is an ongoing event; a state of being thankful whether things are good or bad. That might sound counter-intuitive, but even in bad times there is much to be thankful for. We are meant to follow this example. Think of the worst thing that has happened to you today. Perhaps you got a traffic ticket or a less than favorable medical diagnosis; or a rebellious child, or a flour canister that dropped on the flour. Whatever your situation, choose to speak thanks over the experience. Stress will lessen and the felt presence of the Lord will likely show up.
1 Thessalonians 5:18 Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.
Be Thankful in the Now
Are you a thankful person or one who feels overlooked when it comes to receiving God’s blessings? Only you can answer that question. I pray you are thankful. One way to know is to make a list of all the things you have to be thankful for. My list would include faith, family, friends, a bed to sleep in, food in the refrigerator and cupboards, money to pay the light bill and property taxes. And even more basic I am thankful for the air I breathe, legs that get me out for morning walks, praying friends, and the mercy of the Lord to forgive every sin. Are you ready to make your list? If you are a parent, this is the perfect time to instill the spirit of thanksgiving into the lives of your children.
