Words Reflect the Heart. Careless words wound. Encouraging words add a positive bounce to our lives.

I’m becoming acutely aware of the long-lasting effect words have; especially their influence on listening ears. When was the last time serious thought was given to the words allowed to leave our mouths?

In my book, Mother’s Fury, Charles Rice was raised by a mother whose furious, insensitive words left deep scars and plenty of emotional damage behind. Her words cut deep into his spirit and left him feeling worthless; unworthy of being loved.  One of the biggest ways we harm others is through the spoken word. The unbridled tongue can quickly become a dreadful weapon of destruction.

Words Speak From Heart Attitudes

We’ve all said things we wish we could take back. Where does that talk come from? Why do such dark thoughts lurk within our hearts? Original sin is part of the answer. Guarding our mouths begins with understanding the tongue reveals the attitudes of the heart.

Here is a list that can help us identify some of those deep, poisonous thoughts. This one is incomplete and it will vary from one person to another.

The Power of the Tongue is Far Reaching

The first place to practice bridling our tongues is within our own families. This might mean listening more, speaking less, thinking to ask for God’s wisdom before answering. If we can make the necessary changes to our hearts, our words reflect a positive vibe. They will draw us closer to one another. Our family and friends will see us a a safe place to share what’s on their minds.

Proverbs 12:18 NIV The words of the reckless pierce like swords, but the tongue of the wise brings healing.
